Why reading breaks the HSK plateau

Mandarin Chinese has about 1.1 billion speakers — more than any other first language. It's also the hardest major language for English speakers, largely because you need to recognize 3,000+ characters to read most adult text.

The traditional path — study 50 characters a week, do flashcards, do graded readers — works but is slow and demoralizing. Reading with tap-to-translate collapses the timeline: you can start reading real Chinese from HSK 2-3 because every unknown character is one tap away. You learn characters in context, where they stick, instead of memorizing them in isolation and forgetting them within weeks.

Start with graded readers or children's stories, move to contemporary novels (Yu Hua, Mo Yan in simplified Chinese), and eventually classical works. Each tapped character becomes a flashcard with pinyin, meaning, and the sentence it came from.

Frequently asked questions

Pinyin-only texts exist but won't take you far — real Chinese is written in characters. Lingible lets you see characters as the primary text and reveal pinyin on tap. This is the fastest way to internalize characters because you're always seeing them with their pronunciation, just like a child reading a new word in a book.

Simplified for mainland China and Singapore (about 1.4B people). Traditional for Taiwan and Hong Kong. If you have no specific preference, start with Simplified — it's easier and more widely used. Learning the other set later takes weeks, not years.

With tap-to-translate, intermediate learners (HSK 3+) can start novels within months. Fluent reading (minimal tapping) takes 1-2 years of consistent reading. Without Lingible, the same milestone takes 3-5 years for most learners.
